Common DTF Printing Problems and How to Fix Printhead Issues

In DTF printing, stable printhead performance is crucial for achieving high-quality prints on DTF transfer film. When using a Fedar DTF printer, operators may sometimes encounter issues related to the DTF printhead, DTF ink system, or maintenance components. Understanding common problems with a DTF printing machine and their solutions helps maintain consistent DTF print quality, extends the lifespan of the digital textile printer, and ensures clear and detailed heat transfer printing patterns with accurate color reproduction for garment printing applications.

Below are some common problems encountered with Fedar DTF printers during printing and their troubleshooting methods.

Problem 1: Nozzle Test Shows Broken Lines

Symptoms:
The lines in the nozzle test pattern are discontinuous, with noticeable gaps. Fine horizontal white streaks appear in the printed pattern on the DTF transfer film, which severely affects the final heat transfer printing quality, resulting in incomplete patterns or color banding.

Repair Method:

First, check if the ink tubes of the Fedar DTF printer are bent or clogged, and ensure that the DTF ink cartridge has sufficient ink and that the cartridge cap is properly tightened. If white lines appear, gently shake the DTF white ink cartridge to ensure the pigment ink is evenly mixed, and check that the DTF white ink circulation system is working properly to prevent pigment buildup and DTF printhead clogging.

Select the cleaning function in the RIP software and record a video of the cleaning process to check the height of the capping station and the wear of the wiper blade. Also, check whether the DTF printer maintenance parameters are properly configured.

Turn off the Fedar DTF printer and use a syringe to remove ink from the ink damper, ensuring there is no residual air in the ink tubes. If a specific color test strip shows broken lines, replace the damper to determine whether the problem is caused by a clogged component.

During the cleaning process, check the operation of the ink supply pump. If the pump is not working properly, replace it immediately to ensure smooth circulation within the DTF ink system and stable ink supply to the Epson printhead.

If the nozzles are not printing at all, check that the waste ink tube under the capping station is correctly connected and that the silicone pad is in close contact with the DTF printer printhead surface. Also confirm that the printhead is installed correctly and the fixing screws are tightened.

For minor line breaks, perform 2–3 routine cleaning cycles in the RIP printing software. If the problem persists, soak the capping station in DTF cleaning solution for 10–15 minutes before cleaning again. To protect the Epson printhead commonly used in Fedar DTF printers, do not soak for more than 30 minutes.

Finally, check whether the DTF ink being used is expired. Expired or low-quality ink may directly affect DTF printing quality and could clog the entire DTF printer ink path system, requiring deep cleaning.

Problem 2: Printing Tilting or Ghosting

Symptoms:
Test strips printed by the Fedar DTF printer appear tilted, misaligned, or ghosted, which reduces the accuracy of the printed pattern on the DTF transfer film.

Repair Method:

Gently clean the printhead nozzle surface and wiper blade with a lint-free cloth dampened with DTF cleaning solution. Check whether the wiper blade is deformed or worn; replace it if necessary to ensure effective DTF printer printhead maintenance.

Check for static electricity in the printing environment. Adjust the ambient temperature and humidity by using a humidifier or air conditioner, and ensure the Fedar DTF printing machine is properly grounded. A stable environment helps improve DTF printing accuracy and overall production stability.

Check the DTF ink for sediment, especially DTF white ink. Since white ink contains a high concentration of pigment particles, shake the ink cartridge thoroughly before printing. Avoid using expired ink, which can lead to printhead malfunction.

You can inject DTF cleaning fluid into the capping station, allowing the DTF printhead to soak for 15–20 minutes. After that, perform a cleaning cycle and print a nozzle test to confirm that the DTF printer has returned to normal operation.

Problem 3: Garbled Characters or White Spots in the Print Output

Symptoms:
During DTF printing, irregular white spots, garbled characters, or stripes appear in the output image.

Repair Method:

Check whether the printhead cable pins are bent, broken, or contaminated with ink. If any of these problems are found, replace the printhead cable immediately to ensure stable signal transmission in the DTF printer control system.

Reconnect the DTF printhead cable and confirm that it is correctly installed. In some cases, the printhead nozzle plate itself may be damaged, which can also cause garbled output or partial ink loss during heat transfer printing.

Check whether the printhead mounting screws are securely tightened to ensure stability during the high-speed movement of the DTF printer carriage system.

Clean the encoder strip and encoder sensor in the DTF printer carriage system. If the encoder strip is scratched or heavily contaminated and cannot be cleaned, it must be replaced to ensure accurate carriage positioning and prevent image misalignment during DTF transfer printing.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, the carriage board or printhead adapter card may be faulty. In this case, further diagnostics of the Fedar DTF printer control system are required, and damaged electronic components must be replaced to restore normal printer operation.
