Anyone who’s been printing DTF for more than a week has probably seen it: a design that looks fine until the light hits it and suddenly you notice greasy spots. Sometimes it’s only a corner, sometimes the whole thing looks like it’s been smeared with oil. This is what people call oily prints in DTF.
And they don’t just look bad, they can mess up the way a print sticks to fabric. If you’ve run into this, don’t worry too much; it happens to a lot of us. The good part is, oily DTF prints usually come from a few simple things, and once you know what’s behind it, the fix isn’t that complicated.

There isn’t just one cause. Oily prints happen for a bunch of reasons, and half the time it’s a mix. Here are the most common ones:
This is probably number one. If your design is pushing way too much ink onto the film, it doesn’t cure properly. Imagine painting a wall with a roller that’s dripping. Instead of drying smoothly, the paint runs and stays glossy. Same idea with DTF.
DTF ink is picky. If the powder doesn’t melt right or if the curing temperature is too low, the oils in the ink rise to the surface. That’s when you get the greasy shine. Even curing too quickly can cause uneven spots.
If your shop is damp, forget about clean results. The film sucks up moisture, the powder clumps, and when you cure it, all that trapped water mixes with oil in the ink, and you get greasy patches.
Cheap ink or low-quality adhesive powder will betray you every time. Some inks have more oil in them, so they’re harder to cure. Powders that don’t melt evenly can leave oily streaks.
Sometimes it’s just maintenance. A nozzle that’s spitting too much ink, or buildup inside the printer, can cause blotches that dry greasy.
Okay, so you already have oily spots on your print. What now? Throw it away? Not always. A lot of the time, you can save it.
Go into your RIP software and lower the saturation a bit. You don’t need to drop it a lot; even small adjustments can stop oversaturation. Do a test strip first before running the full sheet again.
This works more often than you’d think. If the problem is under-curing, just run the film back under the heat. Press or oven, doesn’t matter, as long as the temperature is right (around 300–320°F). Give it another 10–20 seconds, and the shine often disappears.
Before you powder, let the film sit under light heat for a few seconds. This takes away the surface wetness. When you add powder after that, it sticks better and melts cleaner.
If your powder looks old, clumpy, or uneven, throw it out. Fresh, smooth powder makes a huge difference.
Sometimes the fix is boring but effective. Run a nozzle check, do a head clean, and make sure nothing is leaking. If ink is pooling, it’ll definitely cause shiny marks.
Fixing prints is fine, but prevention is way better. If you don’t want to waste film and ink, set up your process so oily prints don’t happen in the first place.
Keep humidity steady, somewhere around 40–60%. If your shop is damp, get a dehumidifier. If it’s too dry, add some moisture. Stability is key.
Dial in your color settings so you’re not drowning the film. Strong colors are fine, but oversaturation is the enemy.
I know it’s tempting to go cheap, but reliable ink and powder save you more in the long run. They cure better, flow smoother, and you get fewer weird surprises.
Don’t guess. If the manual says 300°F for 60 seconds, stick to it. Cutting corners just leads to half-cured oily spots.
Run regular cleanings and keep your printer in good shape. A dirty nozzle will undo all your other efforts.
